During the course of this week, the Muslim Council of Britain has received dozens of inquiries from the national, local and even international media about the self-styled 'Muslim Patrol' harassing the residents of Tower Hamlets in London, bringing our faith and community into disrepute.
We have condemned this behaviour
, as have our local affiliates
and local imams have rejected any Islamic basis for such behaviour.
The truth is, this behaviour is not typical of British Muslim communities in this country.
In these weeks where Britain is getting to grips with snow, we highlight here how British Muslim communities have gone out to help the community around them. Here is a resident of Leicester, writing to the Leicester Mercury, praising members of Masjid Umar
, an MCB affiliate, for clearing the snow for the whole community around them.
And here is a local television news report of Muslims
in Newcastle, calling themselves the 'Muslim Snow Patrol', who have come out to clear the snow in the streets of Newcastle.
Dr Shuja Shafi, Deputy Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain said: We urge our affiliates and all local mosques and associations to go out and share their good news stories. Send us your stories for our website, and inspire other Muslim communities, and our fellow Britons.
As the Faith Minister Baroness Warsi mentioned last night, there are sections of the media who insist on pushing a negative narrative of British Muslims. Let's make their job harder by telling our own good news stories. Notes
