Forgetting & re-memorizing the Qur’ân

My main problem is that of memorizing the Qur’ân. I started forgetting it due to my carelessness, but now I want to learn it again. Please help me with this and tell me what Allah says about forgetting the Qur’ân.

Memorizing and learning the Qur’ân is one of the greatest forms of worship and one of the purest acts of obedience.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The best of you are those who learn the Qur’ân and teach it to others.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî]

He also said: “Whoever reads one letter of the Qur’ân receives ten rewards. I am not saying that “Alif Lâm Mîm” is a letter. Alif is a letter. Lâm is a letter, and Mîm is a letter.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhî with an authentic chain of transmission.]

Your concern for the Qur’ân is very commendable. You will be rewarded for your sincere attention to re-commit it to memory. You must exert a lot of effort in what you have resolved to do. You will have to be consistent in reading and reviewing what you have learned and memorized.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Learn the Qur’ân, preserve it, and recite it in a musical voice, because the Qur’ân is more apt to get away than a young camel from its hobbles.”

We are equally encouraged to understand the Qur’ân and its meanings, which is the primary reason the Qur’ân was revealed. Allah describes it as: “…a book We have revealed to you, blessed, so they may contemplate its verses and the people of discernment may take heed.”

There are no authentic hadîth about forgetting the Qur’ân. What is related that there is no sin greater for the Muslims “than a chapter or verse of the Qur’ân given to a man that he then forgot" is a weak hadîth. It was declared weak by many prominent hadîth scholars like al-Bukhârî, al-Tirmidhî, and Ibn Hajar.

Nevertheless, forgetting a portion of the Qur’ân is a serious act of negligence that a believer should avoid.

I ask Allah to bless you with success and guidance.
