The Earth moves through space.

Is it true that that the Earth is static and not moving? We are taught in our science courses that the Earth is rotating on its axis and revolving around the Sun.

Allah describes the Earth in the Qur’ân as a qarâr, meaning something either sedentary or stable.

Allah says: “Who made the Earth firm to live in, made rivers in its midst, set thereupon mountains immovable…” [Sûrah al-Naml: 61]

He says: “It is Allah who has made the Earth a resting place and the sky as a canopy…” [Sûrah Ghâfir: 64]

There is no doubt that the sacred texts mention that the Earth is stable and the Sun is moving. This is not only what the texts mention but, it is also what people, including me and you, feel. Allah talks to people in the way they can understand and feel. The Qur’ân merely discusses the Earth relative to us who are living upon it. The Earth is stable relative to us and the Sun is moving through the sky relative to us.

What astronomers say does not contradict with the sacred texts. They describe the actual astronomical mechanics behind the phenomena we are experiencing here on Earth. This matter may not be directly observable to all people. The movement of the planets in their vast orbits can only be recognized by certain calculations or by using telescopes. The Qur’ân does not explain such details. It is a book sent to guide people and not a scientific book.

We know from direct observation that the Earth is indeed rotating on its axis and this is why the Sun moves through our sky. We also know from direct observation that the Earth is moving around the Sun and this is the reason that we have years. We have no doubt about these facts. However, the Qur’ân is simply not discussing such things.

Allah says: “They ask thee concerning the new moons, say: They are signs to mark fixed periods of time in (the affairs of) men and for pilgrimage” [Sûrah al-Baqarah: 189]. In this verse we can see that when people asked about an astronomical matter, they were requested to pay attention to the religiously relevant matter that they should be familiar with.
