I would like to know what Islam says about the concept of intellectual property rights, especially about the copyrights on multimedia products like cassettes, videos,CD's,....ect. Is it permissible to copy any copywritten products and give them to people to use it for free if it would be beneficial for them to have access to such products?

Sheikh Salman al-Oadah

I hold the opinion that people’s rights should be preserved. The work that they have done has value. This value needs to be recognized and respected.

For necessity, copies may be made under two conditions:

1. The copy must be intended for personal use only and not be made for commercial reasons.

2. The copy must not be given to other than poor people who cannot afford to buy the item.
