Is it permissible for a person to earn money by being the imam at a mosque?
Answered by the Permanent Committee of Saudi Arabia for Fatwâ and Research It is permissible to receive money for being an imam of a mosque. This practice has been going on for ages without any objection from the scholars.
The position of imam is a position of public interest, so whoever assumes it is entitled to financial assistance from the public treasury or from donations. Source: Islam Today
