The deaths of Fâtimah and `Alî

Can you please tell me how Fâtimah and `Alî were murdered and who killed them? Also, why is it that the Ahl al-Sunnah wa Jamâ`ah do not discuss the deaths of members of the family of the Prophet (peace be upon him)?

Sheikh Anîs al-Tâhir, professor at the Islamic University in Madinah

`Alî (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed on Sunday night on the eleventh of Ramadan in the year 40 AH. His killer was `Abd al-Rahmân b. Muljim.

Fâtimah was not murdered. She died a natural death when she was twenty-four years old. She died six months after the death of the Prophet (peace be upon him), on Tuesday night of year 11 AH on the third of Ramadan.

As for your question as to why Ahl al-Sunnah wal Jamâ`ah do not mention the biographies of Fâtimah and `Ali and gloss over the details of their deaths, we say that this is simply not true. In fact the scholras have paid very special attention to their biographies and to the biographies of other members of the family of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

In fact, they follow the hadîth in doing so. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “I have left among you what if you hold firmly you will never go astray: Allah’s book and my family.”

The family of the Prophet (peace be upon him) who adhere to Allah’s book have a double right on the Muslims: one right for being Muslim and the other for their relationship to the Prophet (peace be upon him).

Ibn Taymiyah wrote an entire book devoted to the rights of the Prophet’s family.

Imam al-Nasâ’î wrote a book about Imam `Alî. In fact, among the biggest, most encyclopedic works ever written about one Companion was the one written about `Alî by Yûsif Uzbik and the one written about Fâtimah by `Ali Ridâ.

`Umru b.Shâhîn, (who died in 385 AH) wrote book titled Sayyidah Nisâ’ Ahl al-Jannah, Juz’ min Fadâ’il Sayyidah al-Nisâ’ ba`da Maryam, and Fâtimah bint Rasûl Allah.

Jalâl al-Dîn al-Suyûtî, (who died in 1031 AH) wrote a book entitled al-Thûghûr al-Bâsimah fi Manâqib Fâtimah.

Another book was written by Muhammad `Abd al-Ra’ûf al-Minâwî entitled Sayidah Nisâ’ Ahl al-Jannah, Fâtimah al-Zahrâ’.

There are countless other books written by Ahl al-Sunnah to clarify the dignity of the Prophet’s family including `Ali and Fâtimah (may Allah be pleased with them). This shows the deep concern of Ahl al-Sunnah for the Prophet’s family, and especially for `Ali and Fâtimah (may Allah be pleased with them).
