Keeping a pet animal in a cage

I would like to know if it is permissible to have a beard dragon (a type of lizard) as a house pet. I am concerned, because I was told that no animal should be kept in a cage, and my son has a beard dragon as a pet.

Sheikh Salman al-Oadah

From the evidence, it seems that it is permissible to keep an animal in a cage. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked a little boy about a bird that he was keeping. [Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim]

Moreover, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “A woman entered Hell for locking up a cat until it died of starvation. She did not feed it, give it to drink or let it have food elsewhere.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not condemn the woman’s detention of the cat, but did so for her failure to give it food and drink. It is, therefore, obligatory for the one who wishes to keep animal in his house to provide for it and care for it in the best possible manner.
