Ruling on wearing a belly-button ring
Question:
If it is halal to get a belly ring on the conditions that the belly will not be exposed.

Answer:
Praise be to Allaah.

It is permissible for women to wear jewellery according to the custom in their societies, because of the report narrated by Ibn Majaah from ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib (may Allaah have mercy on him) who said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) took hold of some silk in his left hand and some gold in his right, then he raised his hands and said: “There are forbidden for the males of my ummah, and permitted to the females.”” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Majaah.

Wearing a ring in the belly-button is permissible subject to certain conditions:

1-    It should not be the fashion of a group of kaafir women.

2-    It should not be seen by anyone other than the husband.

3-    It should not result in any kind of harm.

4-    It should be the custom for women to wear gold as jewellery in this manner, because it is permissible for women to wear jewellery but it is not permissible for them to use gold all the time.

Ibn Qudaamah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Mughni (2/325): It is permissible for women to wear jewellery of gold and silver and gemstones according tot heir customs, such as bracelets, anklets, earrings, rings, and what is worn on their faces, necks, hands, feet, ears and elsewhere. As for that which is not customarily worn among them, such as on the waist and the like, which is usually men’s way of adornment, that is haraam, just as it is haraam for a man to wear women’s jewellery. End quote.

Shaykh Muhammad al-Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked about the ruling on piercing a girl’s ears or nose for the sake of adornment.

He replied: The correct view is that there is nothing wrong with piercing the ears, because this is one of the means of wearing permissible jewellery, and it is proven that the women of the Sahaabah wore earrings in their ears. The pain is minor, and if it is done when the girl is small, it heals quickly.

As for piercing the nose, I do not remember the scholars saying anything about it, but it is a kind of mutilation and spoiling the appearance as far as we can see, but perhaps others do not think that. If a woman lives in a country where wearing nose jewellery is regarded as an adornment and beautification, then there is nothing wrong with piercing the nose in order to wear jewellery there. End quote from Majmoo’ Fataawa Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (11/question no. 69).

And Allaah knows best.
