Ahmadinejad warns Obama over interference

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has criticized his American counterpart anew, saying Barack Obama's stance on Iran's post-election protests has jeopardized his change-seeking posture.

Addressing a group of judiciary officials on Saturday, President Ahmadinejad questioned President Obama's objective in making what he described as interfering remarks about the current political situation in Iran.

Ahmadinejad's criticism came after Obama snubbed a demand for apology by the Iranian president over Washington's "meddling in Iran's internal affairs."

The American leader responded by taking a shot back at the Islamic Republic on Friday, saying "I don't take Mr. Ahmadinejad's statements seriously about apologies, particularly given the fact that the United States has gone out of its way not to interfere with the election process in Iran."

"I would suggest that Mr. Ahmadinejad think carefully about the obligations he owes to his own people," he added. "And he might want to consider looking at the families of those who've been beaten or shot or detained. And, you know, that's where I think Mr. Ahmadinejad and others need to answer their questions."

"The violence perpetrated against them is outrageous," President Obama said. "We see it and we condemn it."

The Iranian president expressed "surprise" at his American counterpart's remarks, saying he revealed Washington's true face for the Iranian nation and all nations of the world.

"Didn't he say that he was after change?" Ahmadinejad queried. "Definitely, they have made a mistake."

The Obama White House has been looking at ways to create a change in tone from the hostile one adopted by the former administration of George W. Bush toward Iran.

President Obama with a slogan of "change" had pledged to extend a hand of peace to Iran if it "unclenched its fist".

Ahmadinejad downplayed Obama's slogan of change, saying his actions are at odds with his statements and went on to ask the White House to "change its tone and approach."

"If you continue your meddlesome stance, the Iranian nation's response will be crushing and regret-inducing," warned Ahmadinejad.
