WASHINGTON: The US House of Representatives was expected to easily approve a sharply worded resolution Tuesday denouncing a UN report accusing Israel and Palestinian militants of committing war crimes in the Gaza war.
Resolution 867, which was scheduled for vote after the Arab News deadline, bashed the Goldstone report. It was introduced by staunchly pro-Israel Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Florida, and supported by Democrat Gary Ackerman, NY, and his Republican colleague Dan Barton, Indiana, both of whom hold senior positions on the House Subcommittee on the Middle East.
On Monday, the resolution had 114 co-sponsors out of 435 members of the US Congress.
The House was expected to vote in favor of the bill, saying it was a mirror of the UNs one-sided position against Israel, and was used by Israels enemies to excuse their operations.
The wording of Res. 867 has been criticized: The current text of the proposed Congressional resolution, H. Res. 867, contains numerous factual inaccuracies..., said Foreign Policy Report.
Judge Goldstone has also denounced the resolution and has written a letter to protest the wording of Res. 867. He said he found factual flaws in nearly every paragraph, and Goldstone is no Israel basher. He is famous for apprehending Nazi criminals in Argentina. A self-described Zionist, he serves as a trustee of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and has said bringing war criminals to justice stems from the lessons of the Holocaust. ¬
