CAIRO - The world's first underwater mosque has been built in Saudi Arabia, the first such a worship of place in history.
One of our colleagues came up with this idea last summer and we decided to carry it out, diver Hamadan bin Salim Al Masoudi told the Emarates 24/7 website.
The mosque was constructed by a group of private divers in the north-western city of Tabuk.
Divers used plastic pipelines filled with sand to build the first-ever underwater Muslim worship place.
When we put the final touches on it, it was time for afternoon prayers, said Masoudi.
So we performed group prayers in the first underwater mosque in history.
Saudi Arabia is the birthplace of Islam and home to the holy lands of Makkah and Madinah. The building of the underwater mosque came days after the shipbuilding arm of Dubai World announced plans to build a number of underwater hotels in the emirate.
