CAIRO - A book advising Muslim men to beat their wives to control them is sparking outrage among the Muslim minority in Canada.

"It is not like that in our community,” Farzana Baig, a wife of a mosque imam, told the Sun News on Sunday, March 25.

“This is upsetting. A wrong thing against our community.

“My husband doesn't beat me. I haven't heard of this. If it happens it is rare.”

A book is being circulated in Canada advising Muslim men to beat their wives to control them.

Titled “A Gift for Muslim Couple”, the book says “it might be necessary to restrain her with strength or even to threaten her."

It advises a husband may scold “beat by hand or stick," withhold money from her or "pull (her) by the ears," but should "refrain from beating her excessively."

But Canadian Muslims ridiculed the book.

"This is totally wrong,” Farzana's husband, who is a vice-president with Sunni mosque Jame Masjid Mississauga, said.

“It should not be and I don't know what to say. This doesn't represent our community and I will look into it.

“This isn't proper reading and it shouldn't be out there. It makes the whole community look wrong," he said.

The word "beating" of wives is used in a verse of the Qur'an, but scholars maintain it does not mean "physical abuse".

Scholars stressed that Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) generally used to discourage his followers from taking even this measure.

There is no record of the Prophet striking one of his wives; rather, he would withdraw when angered.

In Islam, the marriage of a man and a woman is not merely a financial and physical arrangement of living together but a sacred contract, a gift of God, to lead a happy, enjoyable life.

Women Respect

Canadian Muslims stressed that the Islamic faith encourages Muslim men to respect women rights.

"We were the first religion to give power to women,” said Wasim Vania, president of the Islamic Society of Toronto, said.

“It is sad that someone would write this.

“We don't have hatred in our hearts and we don't teach this. That book should have never entered Canada," Vania said.

The Muslim leader was surprised that the book was allowed into Canada.

“It is a sad day to find such a book in Canada. As humans we can't control everything but we should be able to control what goes on a book shelf.

“We as Canadian Muslims have respect for women. No gender is higher than the other. It is sad to find material like this and it should be pulled."

Mohammed, from the Muslim Welfare Center, was also angry.

"I have never heard of something like this. I'm surprised it was published and I am angry to be portrayed in this light.”

Muslims make around 1.9 percent of Canada's 32.8 million population, and Islam is the number one non-Christian faith in the Roman Catholic country.A survey has showed the overwhelming majority of Muslims are proud to be Canadian.
