CAIRO - Plans by a US pastor notorious for burning the Noble Qur'an to the city of Tampa to accelerate his campaign against Islam are failing to get attention of the Muslim community.

“They can form the Islamophobia all-stars,” Hassan Shibly, executive director of the Council on American-Islamist Relations in Tampa city, Florida, told The Tampa Tribune.

Pastor Terry Johns has announced plans to move his congregation from Gainesville to Tampa.

The controversial pastor believes that he would be able to better spread his anti-Islam message in Tampa than Gainesville.

“Tampa is a much larger area,” Jones said.

“Gainesville has a small mentality. The whole world here revolves around whether the Gators will win a football game. We're more concerned about national and global events.

“We are going full steam ahead for the Tampa Bay area,” he said. “We definitely have support in the Tampa Bay area.”

Jones, the head of a small fringe church in Gainesville, angered Muslims worldwide in 2011 by burning the Qur'an.

He has also written a book titled “Islam is of the Devil” and sold T-shirts espousing the same message

“We will get the financial benefit to selling this property and using that money to obtain new property and to facilitate our mission, which is getting our message out regarding radical Islam,” he said.

Jones also invited the ire of Muslims last year after promoting a US-made film mocking Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him).

Ignorance

However, Tampa Muslims are unmoved by his plans to come to their area.

“He's a nobody; a crazy bigot with hate-filled followers,” Shibly said.

“But they are welcome to practice wherever they wish. It's a free country.”

The Muslim leader opines that ignoring the radical pastor is the best tool to undermine his message.

“Such hatred and such bigotry and such intolerance just brings together the moderates in the community,” Shibly said.

“I think the American people as a whole have rejected his message of hatred.”

US Muslims, estimated at between seven to eight million, have been sensing hostility in recent months.

Several ad campaigns have been launched by Islamophobic blogger Pamela Geller to tarnish Muslims and their religion.

In response, American Muslims have championed rival campaigns to explain the true meaning of Islam and Islamic terms as Jihad.

A recent report by CAIR, the University of California and Berkeley's Center for Race and Gender found that Islamophobia in the US is on the rise.

A US survey had also revealed that the majority of Americans know very little about Muslims and their faith.A recent Gallup poll had found that 43 percent of Americans Nationwide admitted to feeling at least “a little” prejudice against Muslims.
