AL-QUDS – Citing Israel's latest incursions in the holy city, Palestinians are raising alarm over the growing numbers of Jewish synagogues around Al-Aqsa compound that changed the demographics of Al-Quds in a bid to impose a "misleading reality".
“Surrounding Al Aqsa Mosque with Jewish synagogues has been an old Israeli policy to impose new realities on the ground," Ahmad Qurei, a member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee and Head of the PLO Department for Jerusalem Affair, said in a statement cited by Gulf News on Sunday, March 30.
"And to create a new scene where the Jewish colonists will have the necessary chance to divide the holy shrine in terms of worship times and place.”
Reports claim that about 100 Jewish synagogues and ultraorthodox schools are surrounding Al-Aqsa mosque compound in occupied Jerusalem.
Surrounding the holy site with Jewish synagogue was deemed as a part of a "carefully designed plan to Judaize" Al-Quds, according to Al Aqsa Institution for Al Waqf and Heritage.
"In the past couple of years, the Israeli occupation has set up two major synagogues that are only tens of meters away from Al Aqsa Mosque with a third in the process of being set up,” said Mahmoud Abu Al Attah, the media coordinator of the Al-Aqsa institution.
"The Jewel of Israel synagogue will yet be a new centre for the Jewish colonists around Al Aqsa Mosque in [occupied] east Jerusalem,” he said.
Those synagogues, according to Attah, accommodate far right colonists, rabbis and graduate ultraorthodox students.
As Palestinian officials warned of the escalating threats to the existence of Al-Aqsa mosque, Israel supported Jewish synagogues plans.
“The Jewel of Israel Synagogue is major catastrophe that will catastrophically affect the future of [the] Muslims’ third holiest Mosque,” Qurei, the member of the PLO Executive Committee, said.
According to Qurei, Israel has assigned million shekels to construct a Jewish synagogue which is expected to spark fury and angry protests by the Palestinians.
As plans to build Jewish synagogues got the green light, hundreds of Palestinian compounds are being bulldozed by the occupation forces consistently.
A few days ago, a complex that includes a mosque, apartments and media centre was demolished by Israeli forces.
The Mayor of Jerusalem "approved construction in the area...[but]...the Israeli ministry of interior opposed construction," Abu Ghaliya, the owner of the compound, was quoted by Maan News Agency.
Abu Ghaliya's complex was destroyed without prior notice form the occupation authorities.
It followed harsh efforts over the past 18 years to get permission to build the complex that was finally approved by the mayor.
In 2013, Israel has demolished more than 500 Palestinian homes in the West Bank and the occupied East Jerusalem, according to the UN.
About 20% of demolished Palestinian homes in Al-Quds were funded by international aid groups.
Its significance has been reinforced by the incident of Al Isra'a and Al Mi'raj — the night journey from Makkah to Al-Quds and the ascent to the Heavens by Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him).
