STOCKHOLM – In an unprecedented attack in tolerant Sweden, pig's trotters have been thrown into a mosque south of Stockholm after shattering windows of its main door.
“Shortly before 11:00 am we received a call from the mosque in Fittja, the person had just arrived and found pig's trotters inside," police official Ulf Lindgren told Agence France Presse (AFP) on Monday, November 18.
The incident was classified as an act of 'vandalism' and hate crime, according to the police reports.
Sweden Raises First Ever Adhan
Sweden Allows Adhan, Muslims Happy
First Muslim call to prayer in Sweden - Fittja mosque
"But insofar as it is pig's trotters, it could be something else." Lindgren explained.
Islam considers pigs unclean because they are omnivorous, not discerning between meat or vegetation in their natural dietary habits unlike cows and sheep for instance, which eat only plants.
Muslims do not eat pork and consider pigs and their meat filthy and unhealthy to eat.
Looking for witnesses around, police forces said no suspects have been identified yet.
Consequently, security ties have been intensified around Fittja mosque to find clues for the racial incident.
The attacked Fittja mosque has been built in Stockholm's Fitjja district in 2007.
The mosque, the only in Sweden that raises Adhan, is attended by more than 1,500 worshippers.
Sweden's first Adhan ever was rose from Fittja Grand Mosque on Friday, April 26.
Earlier in April 2013, local police ruled to allow Adhan at Fittja mosque in the southern Stockholm suburb of Botkyrka on Fridays.
The permission allows Muslims to raise the Adhan for three to five minutes between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm on Fridays.
The move came in response to a request by Muslims to raise their call for prayers from the Fittja mosque, the only Muslim worship place that has a minaret in Sweden.
Sweden's state-run television broadcast live while Fittja Grand Mosque's imam recited the prayer call (adhan) via a loudspeaker from the minaret.
Muslims make up between 450,000 and 500,000 of Sweden’s nine million people, according to the US State Department report in 2011.
