WASHINGTON - The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), one of the largest Muslim organizations in North America, has been chosen to implement the Charter for Compassion.

The announcement was made by the Charter for Compassion network during ISNA annual convention in Washington last week.

The Charter is a world-wide cooperative effort to restore not only compassionate thinking but also compassionate action to the center of religious, moral and political life.

The Charter for Compassion is the result of Karen Armstrong's 2008 TED Prize wish, which was unveiled to the world on November 12, 2009.

Armstrong, who is best known for her book, "A History of God," is a scholar and a former nun who has written more than 20 books on faith and the major religions.

Armstrong was the keynote speaker at the Annual Community Service Recognition Luncheon at ISNA Convention to recognize a community leader who has made an outstanding contribution to the Muslim community in North America.

Dr. Iqbal Unus received the lifetime achievement award at the Luncheon for his over 40 years of community service to Islam in America and ISNA.

Held last week, ISNA convention brought together a multitude of prominent Muslim, interfaith, and government leaders to discuss pressing issues facing American Muslims.

Tens of thousands of Muslims from around the continent took part in the gathering, which focused on Muslims' civic engagement, including this year's US elections, and interfaith harmony.

“We welcome everyone to Washington, D.C. for the 49th annual ISNA convention and we look forward to a wonderful weekend of family, friendship, fellowship, and peace,” said ISNA President Mohamed Magid.

“The lectures, activities, and functions throughout this convention are designed to reaffirm our American Muslim identity and enhance our community's contributions to the common good of our society alongside all Americans.”

Compassionate Muslims

Also during the convention, The ADAMS Center (All Dulles Area Muslim Society) declared itself the first Compassionate Mosque and has called on other mosques around the country to do the same.

In the near future, ISNA hopes to begin building a network of compassionate schools which will educate the leaders for tomorrow in the compassionate ethos.

ISNA Youth has chosen to dedicate four of its Winter Camps to the study and practice of compassion.

ISNA is the largest Muslim umbrella organization in North America.

ISNA's four-day annual convention dates back to 1963, when the first such event was organized by the predecessor to ISNA, the Muslim Students Association of the United States and Canada.Over the years, the convention has increased in popularity and consistently draws crowds of up to 40,000 Muslims in attendance each year.
