LONDON - Extending a helping hand to Muslim youth, a UK-based Muslim charity is organizing new volunteer teams across British cities to raise awareness of young Muslims and offer confidential emotional support service to those in need.

"Our volunteers will raise awareness of our helpline - so young Muslims know they are never alone,” Nasir Sayed, Marketing Manager of the Muslim Youth Helpline (MYH) charity group, told Digital Journal on Friday, March 23.

“They will raise awareness of the issues they face - to encourage the local community to tackle these head on and finally they will hold fund-raising events to ensure that Muslim Youth Helpline can continue to support those in need."

MYH is a pioneering youth organization that hopes to reach out to more young British Muslims.

The charity provides vital support services to young people in distress and helps aid their development.

Working over the past ten years, the charity group has been receiving all helpline enquiries from across Britain in London.

Spreading their services, MYH were training volunteers in active listening skills to help young Muslims in distress.

Therefore, new volunteer teams were suggested to reach out to British Muslim youth in their cities starting with open days in the towns and cities of Luton, Bradford, Birmingham and Leicester.

"This indicates that there are young Muslims in this area who need our support and we hope to do more to ensure that young Muslims in the North West never have to feel like they are alone," Sayed said.

Britain is home to a sizable Muslim minority of nearly 2 million who have taken full brunt of anti-terror laws since the 7/7 attacks.

Outreach

Reaching out to Muslims in Greater Manchester, which has one of the highest Muslim populations in the UK, another Volunteer Training Day event is planned this week in Manchester.

"We're so excited to be coming up to Manchester to set up our first ever volunteer team in the area on Sunday,” Sayed told the Digital Journal.

“It's amazing to see people come forward and give up their own time to help others in need and the benefit this will have for the local community will be immense."

The volunteering events are not new to the Muslim Youth Helpline charity.

In 2007, the charity launched an innovative scheme to lend and reach out a much-needed hand of support to Muslim inmates in Britain's prisons.

Another helpline for British Muslims was established last February 2012 by Faith Matters, a non-profit British group.

Along with monitoring anti-Muslim incidents, the new line dubbed "Measuring Anti-Muslim Attacks", offers a personal service to victims.
