CAIRO - In an effort to clear misconceptions about Islam, prominent Muslim scholars, senior government officials and dignitaries from around the world will gather in Dubai next week to spread the true peaceful teachings of the Islamic faith."Peace is an integral part of Islam and the convention will discuss how we can attain peace at individual and global levels,” M.K. Ebrahim, chairman of Dubai International Peace Convention (DIPC), told the Gulf News on Wednesday, April 4.

“In the present-day world, we want to spread the message of peace."

Held from 12 to 14 April, the convention is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors.

"Last time, in 2010, the convention attracted over 150,000 visitors and this year we are expecting the number to rise further," Ebrahim added.

Organized by Al Manar Quran Study Center, the three-day event comes as an initiative of the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum World Peace Award that would be attended by a number of renowned scholars, including Yousuf Estes from the US.

The event will also feature speeches by Abdul Rahim Green from the UK, Dr Zakir Naik from India and Hussain Yee from Malaysia.

"The scholars will discuss teachings from the Quran about peace," Ebrahim said.

“It will be a good chance for people of different cultural and religious backgrounds to learn about the teachings of Islam.”

The event will also feature a thematic exhibition on scientific miracles from the Quran and an Islamic bazaar.

"The ‘Salvation exhibition' will give deep insights into the miracles while the Islamic bazaar will be an opportunity for Muslim business people to participate," said Ahmad Hamed of the marketing section of the DIPC.

“Besides, there also will be a kids' corner,” he added.

Prior to the convention, a ‘Peace March' will be held on Friday to raise awareness about the subject and the event.

Starting from the Murooj Rotana Hotel at 4pm on Friday and end at the World Trade Center, the march will include balloons, parachutes, sky divers and helicopters bearing images of peace while bikers and cars bearing peace flags will drive through the city.
