VIRGINIA — A Muslim-run organization has emerged as a model of multi-faith charity that has been benefiting hundreds of low income citizens monthly in the Northern Virginia area for years.
“The thing is we are here, and everybody here is our neighbor and we live together, and that’s the teaching of Islam, to serve everyone who is in need and who is your neighbor,” Tanveer Mirza, one of the founders of FAITH, told Voice of America on Monday, July 7.
“So that’s where we took our inspiration from.”
The Muslim-run charity, the Foundation for Appropriate and Immediate Temporary Help (FAITH), has been providing services for Virginia’s Herndon diverse community since 1999.
Along with the food donations that benefits about 1,000 people regardless of their religious background monthly, FAITH “empowers individuals to get out of poverty”.
“We have an intake process where we evaluate the situation of the client. And then from that evaluation and research, then we make our plan with the client: how are they going to change their situation? We are actually trying to help the client change their situation,” said Amreen Ahmed, the director of the charity organization FAITH.
“We are not maintaining them in the same place. We want them to be proactive.”
FAITH's community programs include, family assistance programs, self-sufficiency, safe and peaceful families program.
It also offers food programs, Children's program and the thrift store from where needy people can get new and used cloths.
“FAITH’s Thrift Store has been supporting lower income families in the Herndon community for over 14 years,” the organization wrote on its website.
“FAITH works hand in hand with local shelters to provide vouchers for their clients to benefit from the store as well.”
“Clothes or something for the house, like for the kitchen, or some toys for the kids,” Maria, a thrift shop customer, explains what attracts her to the store.
“And sometimes to send for my family in my country, in Mexico.”
The United States is home to a Muslim minority of between six to eight million.
A recent survey found that American Muslims are the most moderate around the world.
It also showed that US Muslims generally express strong commitment to their faith and tend not to see an inherent conflict between being devout and living in a modern society.
