CAIRO - American pop star Madonna has invoked rumors about President Barack Obama's religion weeks before the November election after referring to him as a “black Muslim”, The Guardian reported Wednesday, September 26.

"Now, it's so amazing and incredible to think that we have an African-American in the White House,” Madonna said at a Washington concert.

“We have a black Muslim in the White House,” she added in a video clip posted on YouTube.

“… it means there is hope in this country, and Obama is fighting for gay rights, so support the man.”

Obama's religious beliefs have often been raised ahead of election campaigns in the US.

Since his presidential election campaign in 2008, Obama had to put up with rumors, news reports and rival remarks of being a Muslim in disguise.

Fringe groups and a smattering of opponents have espoused rumors that he is secretly a Muslim, similar to persistent but unfounded assertions by some political foes that he was born outside the United States.

Obama, who is seeking re-election in November, is the son of a Muslim-turned-atheist Kenyan father and a white American mother that did not practice religion.

But his middle name, Hussein, his childhood in Muslim-majority Indonesia, and a picture of him in a traditional garb during a visit to his father's homeland Kenya in 2006 stoke the "Obama is a Muslim" flames.

Obama, a member of a congregation of the United Church of Christ in Chicago, repeatedly set the record straight asserting his Christian faith.

Ironic

As her remark caused furor, the American pop star said her reference to Obama's religion was “facetious”.

"I was being ironic on stage,” Madonna said in a statement.

“Yes, I know Obama is not a Muslim - though I know that plenty of people in this country think he is. And what if he were?

"The point I was making is that a good man is a good man, no matter who he prays to.

“I don't care what religion Obama is - nor should anyone else in America," she said.

Madonna has been outspoken in her support of Obama, going so far as to rip off her shirt during recent concerts to reveal the word "OBAMA" on her back.

On the North American leg of a concert tour in support of her latest studio album, "MDNA," the singer has been grabbing headlines with a recent series of onstage antics.

During one of her Paris concerts in July, Madonna landed in hot water with France's far right National Front party after screening footage of party leader Marine Le Pen with a swastika superimposed on her face. The National Front said it would sue the star.

In August, Madonna spoke out at concerts in Russia in support of gay rights and the jailed members of the Russian punk rock band Pussy Riot.
