ROME - The mayor of a small village in southern Italy has banned residents from dying because of lack of cemetery space, Euro News reported.

“It is forbidden for residents … to go beyond the boundaries of earthly life, and to go into to the afterlife,” Mayor Giulio Cesare Fava said in an order.

Fava, the mayor of Falciano del Massico, 50km north of Naples, said the order was issued over a dispute with a neighboring town on their shared cemetery.Death: a Reality, not a Philosophy

“The ordinance has brought happiness,” the mayor was quoted Tuesday as saying.

“Unfortunately, two elderly citizens disobeyed.”

The dispute started when del Massico town gained autonomy in 1964 from the neighboring town of Carinola.

As they redrew their borders, their only cemetery remained in Carinola.

Those who died in both towns were buried in the old cemetery until there was no space for new graves.

Though an expansion was planned, the two towns did not agree on a solution that would satisfy residents of both areas.

“It's a provocative ordinance, but I had to issue it in order to raise awareness amongst the authorities in charge,” said Mayor Fava.

“Since Falciano del Massico gained its autonomy in 1964, we haven't managed to build a cemetery.”

The order, however, left some residents puzzled.“The mayor said that we must not die, but how do we do obey?” asked a local man.
