GAZA CITY – Israel shelled a hospital in the central Gaza Strip on Monday, July 21, killing five people and wounding at least 70, among them doctors and medical staff.

“Staff at al Aqsa hospital was evacuating the wounded after the attack. Chaotic ambulance traffic jam coming in and picking up,” ABC News' Alexander Marquardt reported on Twitter.

“Al Aqsa hospital staff incensed that the hospital was being targeted. Staff all gathered on ground floor, unable to treat patients. #Gaza,” he added.

The Palestinian Health ministry confirmed the news, saying that four people were killed and 70 wounded at Al-Aqsa hospital in the central Gaza Strip.

The attack occurred when an Israeli tank shell slammed into the third floor, housing operating theatres and an intensive care unit, the Health Ministry said.

Israel occupation forces started a ground invasion of besieged Gaza, home to two millions civilian, on Thursday, July 17.

The Palestinian death toll in an Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip rose above 500, mostly civilians, on Monday, July 21.

Israeli jets, tanks and artillery constantly pounded the denselyp-opulated coastal strip, killing 28 members of a single family at the southern end.

Sounds of explosions rocked Gaza City through the morning, with residents reporting heavy fighting in Shejaia and the adjacent Zeitoun neighbourhood.

Locals also said there was heavy shelling in Beit Hanoun, in the northern Gaza Strip.

"It seems we are heading towards a massacre in Beit Hanoun. They drove us out of our houses with their fire. We carried our kids and ran away," Abu Ahmed, he did not want to give his full name for fear of Israeli reprisals, told Reuters.

"It was a night of horror," the 50 year-old told Reuters.
