Egyptian Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa is traveling on Thursday to attend the 47th Conference of the Islamic Union, to be held in the U.S. city of Chicago from 1 to 5 July.
Participating in the event will be prominent politicians, academics, scholars and influential public figures.
Gomaa is scheduled to deliver a speech next Saturday before 12,000 Muslim and non-Muslim Americans, in which he will explain that compassion is an Islamic value explicitly mentioned in the Koran and reiterated in the Sunna (the sayings and practices of the Prophet Mohamed).
He will also explain that Islam expressly prohibits murder and terrorism, while promoting good will and cooperation among people.
By way of example, the mufti will discuss how Egyptian Muslims and Christians have been united within Egypt's single national fabric.
Gomaa will also attend an annual celebration at which the union awards individuals and Islamic institutions that have played a pivotal role in serving the Islamic and American communities.
He will also attend the 13th annual inter-religious dialogue meeting next Sunday.
"The Islamic communities in Canada and the United States can be mediators between the Islamic and American societies," he said.
