CAIRO - Renowned British lawmaker George Galloway has denied claims by a British editor that he has converted to Islam a decade ago, calling these allegations as “categorically untrue”.

"The opening paragraph of Jemima Khan's piece in the New Statesman [referring to an alleged conversion ceremony] is totally untrue,” Galloway said in a statement entitled "The Staggers has fallen on its face", the Guardian reported.

“Moreover, I told her it was fallacious when she put it to me.”

Claims surrounding the faith of the newly elected MP for Bradford West started when Jemima Khan, who converted to Islam ahead of her failed marriage to cricketer Imran Khan, published an article in that he converted to Islam in a ceremony in London.

In her piece in the New Statesman, Khan claimed that the maverick MP took part in the "shahadah" conversion ceremony, attended by members of the Muslim Association of Great Britain, at a hotel in Kilburn, London more than 10 years ago.

“George Galloway, MP for Bradford West, is a Muslim,” Khan said at the beginning of her article.

"He converted more than ten years ago in a ceremony at a hotel in Kilburn, north-west London, attended by members of the Muslim Association of Great Britain.

"Those close to him know this. The rest of the world, including his Muslim constituents, does not."

Galloway denied Khan's claims, confirming that he has never attended any such a ceremony in London.

He also accused Khan of reporting "deliberate falsehoods" and making "schoolgirl howlers which would earn banishment from a first-year journalism class".

“I have never attended any such ceremony in Kilburn, Karachi or Kathmandu,” he added in the statement.

“It is simply and categorically untrue."

Muslims Deny

The Muslim Association of Britain confirmed Galloway's statement, denying any such ceremony taking place in the presence of its members.

"I've never heard anything about that,” Mohamed Kozbar, spokesman for the Muslim Association of Britain, said earlier this week.

“I don't know if George Galloway is a Muslim, but he is supportive of the Muslim community."

Britain is home to a Muslim minority of nearly 2.5 million.

Respect MP Galloway is a main organizer for aid convoys to Gaza, which has been under a crippling Israeli siege since Hamas seized power in 2006.

He is also one of the world's most prominent and outspoken activists, seeking to bring public attention to the other side of British and American foreign policy, and speaking harshly against the sanctions imposed on the Iraqi people.
