TORONTO - In a new effort to fight domestic violence in their country, Canadian Muslims are championing a new campaign to end violence against women.

“This campaign will allow Muslim Canadians to reflect on the reality of violence against women,” Imam Michael Abdur Rasheed Taylor, Co-Chair of the Muslims for White Ribbon Campaign, told OnIslam.net.

“We hope to challenge everyone, especially men and boys, to speak out and think about their own beliefs, language and actions.

The campaign, Muslims for White Ribbon Campaign, aims to end violence against women in the country.

It is being launched with the unveiling of the campaign website (www.MuslimsforWhiteRibbon.com) and with imams and Muslim leaders committing to joinwith others to work to end violence against women.

The campaign runs from November 25, which marks the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women and culminates in White Ribbon Days at the Reviving the Islamic Spirit Conference at the Metro Toronto Convention Center on December 21-23.

“By wearing a white ribbon and making a personal pledge to‘never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and girls' men can act as positive role models and advocates for change,” said imam Abdur Rasheed.

Mosques will dedicate their Friday sermons on December 14 to fight violence against women.

One of its major goals of the campaign is to break the silence on violence against women in the Muslim community by encouraging mosques and organizations to sponsor awareness events and deliver a Friday Khutba on December 14 on the issue.

It also aims to promote healthy relationships through education and create partnerships among mosques, women's organizations, and social agencies to create a future without violence against women.

Un-Islamic

Organizers say that violence against women runs counter to the Islamic teachings.

“Acts of violence against women contradict the core values taught by Prophet Muhammad, peace be on him, who said, 'the best amongst you are those who treat their spouses in the best manners,” Dr. Hamid Slimi, Chairman of the Canadian Council of Imams told OnIslam.net.

"The welfare of women is the welfare of society and their dignity is to be preserved at all times and in all walks of life."

This is not the first time Canadian Muslims join campaigns to fight domestic violence in the country.

In January, Canadian Muslims joined the White Ribbon Campaign to fight domestic violence in their nation.

“The campaign is organized by a committee of volunteers - fathers, sons, grandfathers, brothers, uncles, and friends,” said Imam Abdur Rasheed.

“Violence against women and girls is unacceptable and we are committed to working with our fellow citizens to eliminate it.”

Muslims make around 2.8 percent of Canada's 32.8 million population, and Islam is the number one non-Christian faith in the Roman Catholic country.A recent survey showed that the overwhelming majority of Muslims are proud to be Canadian, and that they are more educated than the general population.
