‘The Satanic Verses’ sparked an outrage in the Muslim world soon after it hit the stands in 1988. Muslims accused it of ridiculing and mocking their faith. Rushdie is reported to have said it was “never my intention” to offend Muslims, but insisted “there are no subjects which are off-limits and that includes God.”

India was among the first countries to ban the novel after violent protests hit India-administered Kashmir, where one person was killed and dozens injured in police firing on February 13, 1989. The controversial novel also invited a fatwa by Ayatollah Khomeini, the supreme leader of Iran. Khomeini in February 1989 called for the death of Rushdie.
