I was told that we are supposed to make special invocations during our wudû’ when we wash each limb. There is an invocation for washing each arm, for washing the face, for wiping the head, and so forth. Is this true? If so, what are these invocations?

Some jurists have mentioned certain special remembrances to be invoked at the time of washing each limb in wudû’.

The basis for these invocations is a hadîth attributed to Alî b. Abî Tâlib. However, all of the chains of transmission for this hadîth are extremely weak.

The hadîth scholar al-Mustaghfirî collects all of these chains of transmission together in his book entitled Kitâb al-Da`wât. Likewise, Ibn `Asâkir mentions them all in his work entitled al-Amâlî.

Al-Nawawî says in al-Majmû` (1/465): “It is baseless.” Ibn al-Salâh says essentially the same thing.

Ibn al-Qayyim writes in al-Manâr al-Munîf (120): “All the hadîth are baseless that mention special invocations for the washing of each limb during our ablutions. Absolutely nothing is authentic.”

Since none of these supplications are established by the Sunnah, it is not prescribed for us to invoke them when we make wudû’.

And Allah knows best.
