Regarding your question about listening to the Qur’an when it is being recited, you have mentioned the verse "When the Qur’ân is read, listen to it with attention and keep silent, that pechance you may receive mercy." [Sûrah al-A`râf: 204]
Many scholars understand that this verse applies only during prayers.
It is not obligatory on everyone to listen to the Qur’ân every time it is recited, particularly when the recitation is coming from a CD or a cassette, even though listening to is is no doubt preferable.
In any event, it would be better to switch off the player while chatting or engaging in other activities.
And Allah knows best.
