Reciting Qur’ân for others (ihdâ’ al-thawâb or îsâl al-thawâb)

Reading the Qur’ân for the benefit of the deceased by way of conferring the blessings for doing so upon the deceased is a matter of disagreement among the scholars. Some scholars believe it is permissible.

Ibn Abî al-`Izz al-Dimashqî says in Sharh al-`Aqîdah al-Tahâwiyyah (2/673): “Reciting the Qur’ân voluntarily and giving the reward to the deceased is permissible and will reach the deceased in the same way as he receives the reward for performing Hajj and fasting in his favor.”

In al-Rawd al-Murbi`, Imam al-Bahûtî al-Hanbalî writes at the end of the chapter on funerals (page 192): “Any good deed, such as a supplication, beseeching forgiveness, prayer, fasting, Hajj, reciting the Qur’ân, and other deeds done by a Muslim for the benefit of another Muslim, whether living or dead, will benefit that other Muslim.”

Imam Ahmad said: “The deceased will derive the benefit from everything performed of good deeds, as indicated by the texts.”

However, many people of knowledge believe that it is impermissible to confer the reward for reciting Qur’ân upon the deceased. This practice was not known at the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) nor during the era of the Pious Predecessors (the Salaf). The Prophet (peace be upon him) never instructed anyone to do so. He informed them about fasting, Hajj, and charity on behalf of the deceased, but not about reciting the Qur’ân.

I hold this to be the strongest opinion. I believe it is preferred to make supplication for the favor of the deceased rather than reading the Qur’ân for him.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When a son of Adam dies, his deeds cease except from three (sources): a continuous charity, a useful source of knowledge, or a pious son who prays for him.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhî (1376) and Sunan al-Nasâ’î (3651)]

As for hiring people for the purpose of reading the Qur’ân and conferring its reward upon the deceased, it is an innovation, even if no set price is fixed.

Ibn Abû al-`Izz writes in Sharh al-`Aqîdah al-Tahâwiyyah: “As for hiring people to read the Qur’ân and confer its blessings upon the deceased, this has never been done by anyone form among the Pious Predecessors. None of the leading scholars of the religion ever recommended it or permitted it.”
