Does eating camel meat nullify a person's wudû’?

Answered by

Sheikh `Abd al-Rahmân al-`Ajlân, lecturer at the Grand Mosque in Mecca

The Hanbalî scholar Ibn Qudâmah says in al-Mughnî: “Eating camel meat nullifies wudû’ under all circumstances. This is the opinion of Jâbir b. Samurah, Muhammad b. Ishâq, Abû Haythamah, Yahyâ b. Yahyâ, and Ibn al-Mundhir. It is also one of the two opinions expressed by al-Shâfi`î on the matter.”

Al-Khattâbî said: “This opinion is the one adopted by most of the people of hadîth.”

The evidence for this opinion is as follows:

Al-Barâ’ b. `Azib narrates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about camel meat. The Prophet (peace eb upon him) said: “Perform wudû’ after eating it.” He was asked about mutton and said: “Do not perform wudû’ after eating it.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhî (81) and Sunan Abî Dâwûd (184)]

Jâbir b. Samurah relates that a man asked Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him): “Should we perform wudû’ after eating mutton?”

He replied: “Perform wudû’ if you wish, and leave it off if you wish.”

He asked: “Should we perform wudû’ after eating camel meat?”

He replied: “Yes, perform wudû’ after eating camel meat.” [Sahîh Muslim (360)]

And Allah knows best.
