Sheikh `Abd al-`Azîz b. Bâz
The celebration held by some people on the 27th of Rajab for the night of the Mi`râj is an innovation that has no evidence for it in our religion. It is not even known for sure that it the 27th of Rajab is the night of Mi`râj, and even if it was, we are not allowed to hold a celebration in its honor, because the Prophet (peace be upon him) never celebrated it, nor did his caliphs or his companions. Had it been good and lawful, they would have done it long before us.
In order for us to be on the right path, we should follow our pious predecessors who conveyed this noble religion to us. Allah says: “The vanguard (of Islam) the first of those who forsook (their homes) and of those who gave them aid, and (also) those who follow them in (all) good deeds, well-pleased is Allah with them, as are they with Him: for them hath He prepared gardens under which rivers flow, to dwell therein for ever: that is the supreme triumph”.
Our Prophet (peace be upon him) warned us against all kinds of innovations when he said: “Whoever innovates in our religion something not part of it, then it is rejected”, [Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim]
Muslims are required to advise each other against innovations, which are not allowed in our religion, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Every innovation is a misguidance”.
And Allah says: “By time, verily man is in loss, except such as have faith and do righteous deeds and enjoin each other to truth and enjoin each other to patience.” [Sûrah al-`Asr]
The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said: “Religion is advice” and when asked to whom he said: “About Allah, His book, and His messenger, to the Muslim leaders and the public.”
