Is al-Rashîd among Allah’s names? What is the evidence for it?

The name of ‘al-Rashîd’ for Allah is not mentioned in any authentic hadîth. The people who count it as a name for Allah are relying on some spurious narrations of the famous hadîth about the names of Allah.

The hadîth reads: “Allah has ninety nine names, one hundred minus one, whoever encompasses them will enter Paradise.”

The text of this hadîth, to this point, is clearly authentic. However, this authentic text comes with no list of names.

The scholars of hadîth have agreed that the list of names provided in some narrations of this hadîth is not from the speech of the Prophet (peace be upon him) but has been added on. The text with the list has three chains of transmission, none of which are authentic.

The name al-Rashîd is mentioned in that list.

However, this does not mean that all the names given in the list are incorrect. Some of those names are mentioned elsewhere in authentic sources.

And Allah knows best.
