It is alright to trim from the beard what extends beyond your handful when you grasp your beard. The evidence for this comes from statements related to Ibn `Umar [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (5892)] and known to be approved by some Companions, Successors, and scholars.

The most authentic declaration linguistically is that the beard is the hair growing on the chin and the jawbones up to the ears. Whatever grows elsewhere on the face - including the skin on or above the cheekbones and on the neck - is not considered to be from the beard and may be removed.
