It is permissible to hire out farmland against some fixed monetary rent. Some people of knowledge have said: “It is permissible to hire the land for silver or gold and all other wealth save edible forms of wealth.” This is according to the most prevalent saying of the people of knowledge.
Ahmad b. Hanbal said: “There has been hardly any disagreement about payment in gold or silver.”
Ibn al-Mundhir said: “There is consensus among the people of knowledge that it is permissible to apportion tillage rights over a piece of land for a fixed period of time in lieu of gold or silver.”
This has been related from Ibn `Umar, Ibn `Abbâs, and others.
Râfi` said: “As for gold and silver, the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not forbid them.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim]
And Allah knows best.
