The lotus tree is known as sidr in Arabic. In colloquial English, it is one variety of a tree referred to as the “Christ’s-thorn” tree. It scientific name is Zizyphus spina. Plants of the genus Zyzyphus are also known as jujube.
There are many unrelated plants with the name lotus. The most common of these are aquatic plants of the genus Nymphaea (the Egyptian lotus, family Nymphaeaceae) or Nelumbo (the Indian lotus). Both plants have round leaves that float on the surface of water. Plants of the genus Nymphaea are also known as waterlilies. This is most likely what you purchased.
