We discussed last week the special nature of the worship known as fasting, as explained in a Hadith in which God is quoted as saying that fasting is the only act people do that belongs to Him. The remainder of the Hadith, which is reported by Abu Hurayrah, says: Fasting is a means of protection. When you are fasting, you must not engage in any quarrel or shouting. Should anyone verbally abuse you or fight you, you should only say: I am fasting'. By Him who holds Muhammad's soul in His hand, ...

My today’s JakartaPost was already in front of my door as I was coming back from mosque to perform early morning prayer. A headline for today is Superstorm Sandy that hit The United States, New York and different areas as well. This condition caused psychological and physical damage for people who were affected. The government also suffered financially and politically. All of sudden my mind went some years ago when I was in my first semester’s class- learning about human. As an introduction, ...

While you are reading this phrase in the different places of the world, with different reasons millions of people have died. If you ask these people one minute ago most probably they did not know that they will die. Whereas you who’s reading this article or me who’s writing this article, maybe we won’t live after a couple of minutes. Maybe these are our last minutes on the earth to repent and to be closer to Allah. By Didem Rahvanci

There are many misconceptions about what it is that Muslims actually believe. It is possible that information about Islam is the best possible way to fight modern Islamophobia and anti-Muslim rhetoric. Understanding what one fifth of the world's population believes may help dispel myths about Islam that have become prevalent in today's media. After all, much of the anti-Muslim movement that has gained power in the right wing in Western Europe and the United States is based almost entirely on ign ...

By ADIL SALAHI Published: Apr 9, 2010 02:39 Updated: Apr 9, 2010 02:41 Friday prayer is very special. It is the only weekly prayer that must be offered in congregation at a mosque, or a place known to the local community. As we pray five obligatory prayers every day, it is the only one in 35 prayers that has these conditions. It is at midday, so that everyone is able to attend, even those who work on night shifts. It is preceded by a speech delivered by the imam, who is required to remin ...

By ADIL SALAHI Published: Aug 18, 2011 22:43 Updated: Aug 18, 2011 22:43 It is very important to note that proper fasting is not achieved by the mere abstention from food, drink and sex from dawn to dusk. It is much greater than that. Fasting is one of the five pillars of the Islamic faith. Over the last two weeks we discussed its special position and some aspects that must be associated with it. We mentioned that the month of Ramadan is a season for good action, and that its reward is certain ...

Islam postulates its economic philosophy and theory with cosmological orientation. It is a cosmic fact that the universe and all the living and non-living beings in it obey inviolable laws of its Creator. So, Islam demands human being to be in communion with the mainstream of the nature and the universe by surrendering voluntarily his will to the will and law of God in the realms of the life where he enjoys freedom. This is how Islam is defined in a nutshell. Both the term Khalifa (Vicegerent) c ...

We all know and it is true that Bible, both Old and New testaments include many predictions and prophecies. If we ask our Christian fathers and friends, pastors and priests about disintegration of Soviet Union, or 9/11 or Iraq War, we might probably get the answer that it was foretold in Bible. I am not sure if Bible prophecies go to that extent or not, even though I am aware of their talent in stretching and shrinking the interpretation of Biblical verses to fit their whims and vested interests ...

Muslims consider Jesus as a Messenger from God, as the Messiah that brought the Gospel to the Children of Israel. Muslims believe that the Gospel was a holy scripture that God revealed to Jesus. The belief in Jesus and all of the other Prophets of Islam is a fundamental part of the practice of Islam. Jesus is mentioned twenty-five times in the Qur'an, and is named explicitly more times than the prophet Muhammad. Muslims believe that Mary gave birth to Jesus while being a virgin. Some Muslims co ...

The situation of women before the birth of Islam was truly appalling. Female infanticide was a common practice and women had no rights. The Arab people lived in a fragmented and barbaric society that was patriarchal in nature. Its tribal practices afforded women no protection. Women were second-class citizens. This wasn't restricted to people in the Middle East, all around the world women were treated in a very similar way.

The Qur'an and the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad address the individual rights of children repeatedly. One of the core values of Islam is providing for those that are at a disadvantage or that cannot provide for themselves adequately. Because of this, the individual rights of women, children, minorities, the elderly, orphans, and the handicapped are extensively discussed in Islamic law, the Qur'an, and in the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad.

What it means to be a Muslim has been misrepresented for many years. Radicals have appeared in the name of Islam. They have portrayed Islam, a religion of love, peace and brotherhood, as one of terror, savagery and rage. Instead of encourage love between people, they have incited hatred. They hated women. They hated children, flowers, the sky and pleasant views. Because they lived far removed from Allah, true Islam and the Sunna of our Prophet (saas). By Aylin Kocaman

All people are born with knowledge of love. A young child never exhibits any prejudice. A child knows no racial differences, no hatred, no classification of others by religion, culture or nation, and will not wrong others because he is born with that love in his nature. Everyone is created with the soul breathed into him by Allah, and that soul is focused on love because Allah loves to love and be loved. By Aylin Kocaman

When Islam started most people took a hostile attitude to it, because they realized that it involved a total change of their way of life. People normally dislike radical changes of what they are used to and what they are familiar with. Yet people accept a total change if they are convinced that it will give them something better. The early Muslims felt that they were taking a highly unfamiliar road, but they realized that it led them to real happiness. Some of them had a special introduction to ...
