We discussed last week the special nature of the worship known as fasting, as explained in a Hadith in which God is quoted as saying that fasting is the only act people do that belongs to Him. The remainder of the Hadith, which is reported by Abu Hurayrah, says: Fasting is a means of protection. When you are fasting, you must not engage in any quarrel or shouting. Should anyone verbally abuse you or fight you, you should only say: I am fasting'. By Him who holds Muhammad's soul in His hand, ...

The presidency of Barack Obama is coming to a close and the United States is now on the brink of another presidential election cycle. Barack Obama will be probably seeking a second term, which in terms of policies may be good news for Muslims. This is because the right in the United States has taken an increasingly Islamophobic stance which has bordered on the ridiculous in the last decade. What may not be such good news for Muslims in the United States is that it is quite likely that Barack Oba ...

The modern idea that Christians and Muslims have nothing in common would seem absurd to the founders of Islam. In the very beginnings of Islam, Muslims considered Christians as brothers and believers in the same God as them. However, today Christians tend to view Muslims with suspicion, with a preconceived idea of Islam as a violent religion that advocated bloody Jihad and is oppressive to its followers and non-Muslims alike. Meanwhile, many Muslims adhere to the ridiculous idea that Christianit ...

The relationship between Islam and science has varied over time. Most Muslims consider that natural science and all other scientific pursuits are related to Tawhid. This term is used to refer to a concept that is at the center of Islam: the Oneness of God. Muslims do not consider the workings of the Universe and of Nature as something separate from God, but as something that is intimately linked to the relationship between God and Humanity. It is because of this that the Science is considered a ...

There is no question that the Islamic world was the cradle for modern Science. During its Golden Age, the Muslim community was at the forefront of scientific advances and the pursuit of scientific knowledge. However, after this golden age there came a time of stagnation. A time, after the fall of the Caliphates and Western colonization, in which advances in science were stunted or completely stopped in much of the Muslim world. One aspect of the 20th century that greatly affected Muslim society ...

There are many misconceptions about what it is that Muslims actually believe. It is possible that information about Islam is the best possible way to fight modern Islamophobia and anti-Muslim rhetoric. Understanding what one fifth of the world's population believes may help dispel myths about Islam that have become prevalent in today's media. After all, much of the anti-Muslim movement that has gained power in the right wing in Western Europe and the United States is based almost entirely on ign ...

Muslims believe that, through the ages, God has sent Prophets to mankind. Specifically, the Prophets of Islam are human beings – absolutely not divine – that God has chosen to deliver a message to mankind. The Prophets of Islam received God's revelation and urged their followers to worship God. Muslims believe that every Prophet that God sent preached the belief in a single, unique God – Allah, the Arabic word for God. The Prophets of Islam also preached the importance of avoiding sin and ...

It is the only weekly prayer that must be offered in congregation at a mosque, or a place known to the local community. As we pray five obligatory prayers every day, it is the only one in 35 prayers that has these conditions. It is at midday, so that everyone is able to attend, even those who work on night shifts. It is preceded by a speech delivered by the imam, who is required to remin ...

By ADIL SALAHI Published: Aug 18, 2011 22:43 Updated: Aug 18, 2011 22:43 It is very important to note that proper fasting is not achieved by the mere abstention from food, drink and sex from dawn to dusk. It is much greater than that. Fasting is one of the five pillars of the Islamic faith. Over the last two weeks we discussed its special position and some aspects that must be associated with it. We mentioned that the month of Ramadan is a season for good action, and that its reward is certain ...

By SHEIKH MUHAMMAD AL-GHAZALI Published: Mar 10, 2011 21:59 Updated: Mar 10, 2011 21:59 Many people receive God's great bounty, but they are mindful only of their own desires, careless about others. They immerse themselves in pleasures at the expense of the hungry. In their arrogance, they look with disdain at others. God has warned believers against such stupidity: Believers! Do not let your riches or your children make you oblivious of the remembrance of God. Those who do so will surely be ...

Muslims consider Jesus as a Messenger from God, as the Messiah that brought the Gospel to the Children of Israel. Muslims believe that the Gospel was a holy scripture that God revealed to Jesus. The belief in Jesus and all of the other Prophets of Islam is a fundamental part of the practice of Islam. Jesus is mentioned twenty-five times in the Qur'an, and is named explicitly more times than the prophet Muhammad. Muslims believe that Mary gave birth to Jesus while being a virgin. Some Muslims co ...

Islam, Christianity, and Judaism are remarkably similar. However, there are some fundamental beliefs that are very different between Christianity and Islam. One problem in inter-faith dialogue is the fact that there is still a lot of ignorance about what it is Muslims believe and how it differs from Christianity. Many Christians in Western Europe and the United States, no doubt fueled by the anti-Muslim media, consider that Islam is completely alien to Christianity. This is absolutely not the ca ...

The situation of women before the birth of Islam was truly appalling. Female infanticide was a common practice and women had no rights. The Arab people lived in a fragmented and barbaric society that was patriarchal in nature. Its tribal practices afforded women no protection. Women were second-class citizens. This wasn't restricted to people in the Middle East, all around the world women were treated in a very similar way.

The Qur'an and the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad address the individual rights of children repeatedly. One of the core values of Islam is providing for those that are at a disadvantage or that cannot provide for themselves adequately. Because of this, the individual rights of women, children, minorities, the elderly, orphans, and the handicapped are extensively discussed in Islamic law, the Qur'an, and in the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad.

One of the main misconceptions about Islam is that Muslims and Arabs are synonymous. In fact, Arab Muslims are a small portion of the Muslims in the world. This misconception is in large part due to the fact that the Middle East is a part of the world that is rife with conflict, with many competing interests concentrated in a small area. The fact that much of the world's oil is concentrated in this area, that Islam's holy places are located in the Middle East, that Islam was born in the Middle ...

One of the most widespread misconceptions about Islam is that Muslims are violent terrorists. This is in large part due to the rampant Islamophobia in the media. Few other religions receive the kind of unfair generalization that occurs when someone from a Muslim background commits a terrible, violent act. One notable example in recent times was the atrocious massacre of young people in Norway, at the hand of an extremist right-wing fanatic. Muslims and Islam were being demonized in the media eve ...

When Islam started most people took a hostile attitude to it, because they realized that it involved a total change of their way of life. People normally dislike radical changes of what they are used to and what they are familiar with. Yet people accept a total change if they are convinced that it will give them something better. The early Muslims felt that they were taking a highly unfamiliar road, but they realized that it led them to real happiness. Some of them had a special introduction to ...
