I have been born with a prominent jaw line which means my teeth stick out and I have a very unappealing side profile. I have been called things like "Mr. Rodent" and "rat-face". This has caused me a huge amount of emotional pain and loss of self-esteem. My orthodontist recommended dental surgery to realign my top jaw with my bottom jaw. I am very keen to do this as I would like to correct this disfigurement. Please advise me on whether this operation is lawful in Islam. Also, ...

Please explain to what extent cosmetic surgery is allowed in Islam.

I have a question regarding cosmetic surgery. When I was younger, I had a medical problem, which resulted in a hormone imbalance. As a result of this, my breasts did not develop. My sisters and nieces all have normal breasts, but I have the breasts of a small girl and not of a woman. If I didn’t have this medical problem, my breasts would be normal. Is it permissible for me to have cosmetic surgery to fix the shape and size of breasts to look like normal breasts? I must also note that I do not ...

Someone told me that that is not haraam because they are not drugs and so long as they do no harm there is nothing wrong with taking them. In fact the doctor told me: There is nothing wrong with taking them because they do not harm the body, so long as a single dose is not more than 20 mg. What is the Islamic ruling on that?

I want to know the Islamic view on the topic of stem cells and cell banks. A cell bank is a place where a person's stem cells are stored in return for a fee for a certain length of time -- several years -- so that they can be used in the future if needed.

I am going to give birth soon and the doctor told me that she wants to keep the umbilical blood. She said that it can be used to treat many diseases. This is the first time I have heard such a thing and I did not know what the Islamic opinion is concerning that. I hope that you can advise me about that. Should I agree to that or not? She told me that it is my choice.

The vaccinations or immunisations that are given to children are a questionable matter. The prevalent theory says that once you give the child a small amount of the virus that causes a certain disease - which is known as immunisation or vaccination - he then develops immunity against that disease of the rest of his life. But I became concerned about this issue after I read that most of the immunisations that are given to children are derived from rotten blood of horses, pus from sick cows, pigs' ...

I would like to donate bone marrow to patients who are suffering from leukaemia (blood cancer) but I want to make sure that it is halal. There are two ways of helping leukaemia patients, either through a surgical bone marrow donation or by donating peripheral blood stem cells through a non-surgical procedure, called PBSC. Donating bone marrow is a surgical procedure done under general or regional anesthesia in a hospital. While a donor receives anesthesia, doctors use needles to withdraw liq ...

Is menthol permissible in Islam? As my chemistry professor told me that menthol is an alcohol because it belongs to the hydroxyl group -OH. I have difficulty in breathing at night, and I use nose drops but I have not been able to use them for a number of nights, so my doctor recommended other medicines that contain menthol. I hope that you can help me as the matter is very important. May Allah bless you.

I got sick and had surgery in the hospital. When I came out of the hospital the specialist told me that I should not wash myself with water for five months, which included the blessed month of Ramadan. I hope that you can advise me whether I should follow the doctor's advice for five months, or should I do ghusl and pray and fast Ramadan?
