Is it true that the Prophet (peace be upon him) told us to dunk the fly into our drink if it falls into it? If so, how do we explain this scientifically? Also, are we required in Islam to do this even if we do not want to?

I was reading a newspaper column that presents question and answers in the light of the Sunnah. A reader had asked whether killing a gecko earned a Muslim reward. To my utter shock, the answer given by the columnist was in the affirmative. He justified his position with strange sort of reasoning that defies common sense and logic. According to the columnist, there is a major reward for killing a gecko because, when Abraham (peace be upon him) was thrown into the fire, it was a gecko that kept bl ...

How have the scholars explained this hadith: Sahih Muslim (5544) where Salim relates on the authority of his father. that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "Kill the snakes having stripes over them and short-tailed snakes, for these two types cause miscarriage and they affect the eyesight adversely." So Ibn 'Umar used to kill every snake that he found. Abu Lubaba b. 'Abd al-Mundhir and Zaid b. Khattab saw him pursuing a snake, whereupon he said: "They were forbidden (to ...

Is fishing as a hobby allowed in Islam? This means catching fish with a rod and reel, but not to eat them, but rather to return them to the sea, river or lake.

I read in Sahîh al-Bukhârî that some monkeys stoned another one for adultery. Does this mean that adultery is sinful for animals? This sounds really silly to me. Can you explain this?

In the Qur'ân and hadîth, we hear mention being made of the lotus tree. What exactly is it? I purchased some lotus leaves from a Chinese market and would like to know if I purchased the leaves of the lotus tree.

In our yard, there is a lotus tree that has grown to the extent that it is crowding us out. We wish to have it cut down. However, our family is upset about it. They say that it is a tree that should not be cut. Is this true? Does the lotus tree have such significance?

We recently went to a public park, and in it we found trees that bore plums and cherries. We picked them thinking that the park is public property and that as tax payers, we have a right to it. We also did not see at the park any sign stating that we could not eat of its fruits. However, since then we have been worried that perhaps what we did was wrong Islamically. Please clarify this issue for us.

It comes in a hadith that even if you sow a seed, you will get the reward. Do we get the reward of growing plants in a pot, like house plants. And if we take good care of them but they die, do we get the sin for that?

Al-Salâm `Alaykum. Can a Muslim keep a cat as a pet?

Dear Sheikhs, I need to know if it is permissible to have my female pet cat sterilized, because I fear that we will not be able to find homes for all the kittens she is producing. Also, my friend has a male cat that is going everywhere in the neighbourhood at night, causing all sorts of problems. People are advising him to have it neutered, since neutered cats are generally more well-behaved and tend to stay home. Also, neutered male cats do not leave urine spots everywhere in the house to mark ...

I would like to know if it is permissible to have a beard dragon (a type of lizard) as a house pet. I am concerned, because I was told that no animal should be kept in a cage, and my son has a beard dragon as a pet.

Is it permissible to feed my cats cat food which is not halâl? They do not come in to the house and are fed outside.

We have had a cat for eight years now. We want to kill it because it sprays everywhere and we are afraid that it might fall pregnant. We cannot consider setting it loose on the street, because it is so weak that it will not be able to survive on its own. We plan to administer an injection and not poison, so it will be less painful for the cat.

I am wondering if there is any ruling in Islamic Law about the naming of pets? Is it alright to give your pet cat a 'human name'? I never thought about it until someone questioned the human name I gave my new cat.

If we know that veal is produced by exceptionally cruel means, is it wrong to eat it? It seems inconsistent that Islam, which affords animals so many rights, could sanction this. In some countries, young calves are kept in what are called veal crates, which are tiny stalls which do not allow the calf to turn around, lie down, or even extend its limbs. The calves suffer physically and mentally. They get leg and joint disorders since they cannot use their muscles. Their bones break, and they g ...

Since pigs are regarded as filthy animals, should we allow our children to see them at zoos and at farms, where they might become too familiar with these animals? Is it alright to allow our children to watch nature programs and television dramas featuring pigs? Is it permissible to allow them to watch animated cartoons featuring pig-like cartoon characters? Since pigs and dogs are impure and should not be kept in the house as pets, is it wrong to allow our children to play with plush toys in ...
